Renegade Water Secrets with Phillip McClusky, who lost 200 lbs. and found health and happiness in a raw food lifestyle. He is the host of www.lovingraw.com.Phillip: Thank you very much Kevin. I appreciate the opportunity to be on the phone with you and for all of your listeners as well. I’m really excited for tonight’s show.Kevin: Awesome. Well, let’s start very simply. Why don’t you just start by talking a little bit about what you went through, in your past, before you started to realize that maybe you needed to change.Phillip: Well, I had been overweight my entire life, so like you had mentioned I grew up being the “cute chubby kid” which everybody liked to pinch my cheeks and such. And then somewhere along elementary school I started to get to be fairly heavy and then junior high school I think it worked into being rather obese. And then high school and after high school I became morbidly obese until finally I reached a point of 400 pounds.
So many people ask me, “How do you get that big?” And the funny thing was is my mom never really had salt or sugar in the house growing up and we didn’t have that much junk food to speak of. But a lot of it tended to be really heavy amounts of food, just large, large portions, eating two and three times the amount that everybody else at the table had, going back for seconds and thirds and just really trying to fill some sort of emotional void that was there instead of dealing with it in other ways. It resulted in emotional eating. So that’s kind of the start of this and really where it brought me up to was an amazing place. It was
very difficult growing up that way.
Many times I didn’t even know there was an option. There were times I just resigned to the fact of thinking that I was never going to be in shape and just actually be happy, and just tried to be happy some how, some way, in shape, form, with being overweight. And I actually tried to do that for a couple of months until I really got to the place where I was like, “That’s just such a terrible attitude. There’s got to be some way…” And I had given up hope. I was researching and just like you mentioned I had tried literally every type of diet known to man. You can mention it and I’ve tried it, I’m sure. Thirty different diets over the course of the time, even some of the other types of things like hypnotism and guided imagery and water fasting and even tried vegetarian and vegan. And for some reason those things just didn’t click in for me, until later on I found raw foods. That discovery really was to be the catalyst to change the rest of my life.Kevin: So you said that you were about to consider, or you maybe even met with the doctor about bypass surgery. Is that correct?Phillip: Yeah, what happened is I didn’t have any…basically after all these different diets I didn’t have any other choice, any other option, I felt, and so I kind of just did what the media was really pushing at the time. And they were really pushing gastric bypass surgery being the only sort of answer for somebody with this type of situation. So literally living and going through all these diets and just feeling hopeless, I thought that that was the only thing for me.
So I went to the hospital and was welcomed in. The surgery was widely accepted and went through literally a month of tests to satisfy my insurance company. Probably eight or nine different tests, sleep apnea, staying in the hospital overnight, heart tests, breathing tests, everything you can think of, to sort of get this approval from my insurance company. And they finally approved it and they said, “Okay, you can have this. We’ll pay for it. You can do it anytime you want.”
I had been going to some of the support groups and had seen people that had already gotten the surgery and found that some people were having complications and there was a chance that people were dying on the table and were dying later on from complications. Even people that were totally healthy, per say, and stuck on the plan very well were still having some complications. And then I had heard about some people who had literally had the surgery and lost 150-200 pounds and then somehow stretched their stomach and gained it all back, which I didn’t even know was possible. Then I actually met a friend’s mother who had lost all the weight, gained it back, somehow convinced another doctor to do the surgery a second time, which I hadn’t even heard of, lost all the weight and gained it back again. So I kind of felt like this wasn’t the answer, but it was the only thing.
As I was about to actually have it done at the very last moment just a still voice inside me said, “Don’t do it.” And I knew at that moment that there had to be some other option. So that’s when I really decided to bypass gastric bypass surgery.Kevin: Wow. So take me through the thought process here. You tried all these other things, literally a Rolodex of different things that you’ve done. They haven’t worked. So you’re faced with bypass surgery, not bypass surgery, oh my gosh…You’re faced with this surgery. How did you make a decision to do what you did? And did you know it was going to work?Phillip: You know, I didn’t know raw was going to work per say, but I had to try something. The last thing I was doing was reading some books about water fasting and somebody in the book had mentioned raw foods. I did a seven-day water fast. It was a very nice experience. It was quite successful. But I heard this word “raw food” and I didn’t know what that meant. So I googled it online and just did a little bit of research and ran across this book called “Raw Family” by the Boutenkos. Each one of the four people in the family had a different disease and they all overcame them with raw food. For some reason when I read this, I mean I literally read the book in an hour, and something just resonated in me. I just felt that somehow, some way, this was the ticket for me. This was what was really going to work this time.
I had no reservations. I literally switched overnight from eating heavy amounts of fast food, basically fast food almost every meal, probably anywhere from two to three times the amount of food the average person eats, switched overnight to 100 percent raw foods. I kind of just knew that it would work and I just made the switch, made a commitment. But more than anything I really made a switch in my mindset, I think, which was the thing that really helped me to make this switch. Because it really wasn’t so much of a struggle this time around, as so many of the other diets were, it was literally like my mind was like, “Okay, you don’t eat this type of food anymore, now you eat this.” And so the process and making the choice was quite simple and I really felt deep down inside that this was going to be the answer for me. Basically I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and I had reached my low.
So many people don’t make change in their life until they’re actually standing in front of their doctor and their doctor says, “Okay, you’re dying. You have a year to live. You have to make a choice about your health.” Then all of a sudden everybody gets excited and wants to make a change in their life. But for me the day that I stepped on the scale and the needle went to 400, that was kind of like my death sentence. So I knew I had to find something and nothing really felt right, it was just what I was doing with the time.
But when I found out and heard and started reading about this raw food thing it just made sense. There was nobody out to make money off of it. There wasn’t any packaged foods I had to make or any cards that I had to move from slot to slot, or any programs or any monthly fees that I had to pay. There was not big mastermind behind this. It was just fruits and vegetables. You could even grow it in your backyard. It seemed simple and it just felt right. And that’s when I went for it Kevin.

Supplements for Osteoporosis

Other than exercise, you can help prevent osteoporosis with certain supplements.  Some of the most common supplements for the prevention of osteoporosis are calcium and vitamin D.  Most people are aware that calcium is important for strong bones and teeth.  They hear it on commercials and their parents tell them from the time they are little to drink their milk. However, most people probably do not take it as seriously as they should.  It really is a good idea to supplement with calcium every day to help prevent osteoporosis down the road.  Calcium supports bone density and bone healing.

While it is true that milk and other dairy products are a good source of calcium, you may not be getting all the calcium you need from these sources.  If you are a vegetarian or vegan especially, who does not consume any dairy products, it is especially important for you to take a calcium supplement.  Broccoli and fortified orange juice contain good amounts of calcium, but you probably cannot stomach enough broccoli to make it worthwhile.

While outside activity in the sun can be a wonderful and fun source of Vitamin D, you will likely not get enough of it without supplementation.  Some areas of the country are sunnier than others, and then there are the winter months to consider when people tend to stay indoors more often.  With the amount of Vitamin D supplements available, it can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.

In keeping up with your protein consumption, and also increasing your Vitamin C and Vitamin K intake, you can also help keep your bones stronger and prevent osteoporosis.  Again, you can do this by supplementing if you are uncertain as to whether your diet provides sufficient amounts of these important vitamins.

A supplement called glucosamine chondroitin, which is actually two supplements generally sold in a compound as one, is very helpful with joint pain associated with age and increased activity level.  While not directly helpful for the prevention of osteoporosis, it is used to treat osteoarthritis.  You may want to consider adding this supplement to help prevent the aches and pains that sometimes occur in your bones as you age and try to maintain the same level of activity and fitness.

Supplementing with these vitamins, minerals, and aminos can be very beneficial when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and diet.  Make sure to keep your alcohol consumption in moderation for healthy bones as well as cut out any smoking habit you may have, since smoking and heavy drinking both increase the risk of osteoporosis.  Follow these simple rules and you will increase your chances of having strong, healthy bones for life.

Cholesterol gets a bad rap.  It has cited, it seems, as the source of nearly every health issue from backache to baldness.  In fact, cholesterol is essential for human life, and without it, we would all be in a crisis

Cut Cholesterol Naturally

1)       Eat more High fiber Diet

The typical American diet-high in saturated fat and low in fiber-creates a perfect storm for high cholesterol.  The ideal diet for lowering cholesterol would be vegan, because cholesterol is found only in animal products-eggs, dairy, and meat.  Crustaceans do not have much fat, but they have twice the cholesterol of beef and chicken.  On the other hand, plant foods do not contain any cholesterol.  Rather, they have fiber, which can help pull cholesterol out of your body.  Soluble fiber also helps slow the absorption of cholesterol and helps reduce the amount of cholesterol liver makes.

2) Try garlic

Detox Myths Shattered: the Truth About Internal Cleansing

Doctors are frantically scurrying to annhilate detox out of the sphere of influence, making claims that invalidate and attack internal cleansing methods, labeling them “dangerous,” and “ineffective.” The scare tactics being employed by M.D.’s, however, can be demystified with a little common sense. Allow me to explain why the medical industry wants to boot detox off the radar screen by addressing the three biggest “myths” told by doctors and spun by journalists:

1.        The body is already capable of detoxing itself. Isn’t this a nice thought? See, this would be true if a person were in a perfect state of health, entirely free of toxins in the first place. Given that 100% of people are exposed to toxins through food, water, pesticides, cleaning products, pollution, and loads of invisible environmental toxins on a daily basis, it is safe to assume that all of us are, on some level, toxic. Doctors claim that the body is capable of eliminating these toxins effectively without the aid of a detox program. The problem, however, is that toxic overload, (which often results simply from consuming processed, packaged food over a lifetime) inhibits the body from being able to eliminate waste and other toxic material quickly enough. The result is essentially a “clogged” digestive tract that is unable to absorb nutrients properly. Furthermore, disease cannot exist in an alkaline, oxygenated enviroment. ____________ won the Nobel Peace price in 1XXX for this discovery. Given this idea,  people would not suffer from chronic health ailments or disease at all unless they were internally toxic on some level. Disease thrives in an acidic environment, and detoxing assists the body in obtaining a more alkaline state.

2.        Detox is dangerous. The only thing dangerous about detox is that it threatens the very foundation of western medicine. Think about it. If people could obtain vibrant health without the use of drugs or invasive surgeries, then there goes the billion dollar pharmeceutical industry and the careers of many doctors. Medical M.D.’s have every reason to critcize and debunk a practice that directly threatens their jobs. Yet, this claim is not only based on defending the medical profession, but also a great deal of ignorance. Typically, medical school programs spend about a day covering material about nutrition. The heart of detox is based on how foods affect the internal atmosphere of the body, and using the right foods, herbs, and natural supplements to correct imbalances. One day of nutrition out of several years of study cannot possibly afford doctors enough information to understand the concept of detox. So, why do doctors claim detox is dangerous? Probably based on the symptoms that many people experience when first undertaking a detox regime: headaches, nausea, fatigue, and other vague symptoms that may resemble a flu or cold. What is common knowledge in the Ayurvedic, holistic, and detox health community has obviously escaped doctors—the idea of the “healing crisis”.  What happens during a detox can be compared to washing a pan that has crusted food stuck to the bottom. The toxic debris that get stored in our bodies is suddenly released and circulating in our bloodstream and throughout our cells before being eliminated, causing symptoms resembling illness the first few days of a detox. Often times, physical symptoms from previous diseases will surface, as residual traces have been stored in the body. Think about the dirty pan. Adding a cleansing agent like water will loosen debris so it can be washed away. A healing crisis, contrary to popular belief, is a good sign that the detox is working properly. It is no more “dangerous” than getting the oil changed for your car. The rewards of sticking it out through a healing crisis are far greater than staying toxic.

3.        Detox involves eliminating food groups and deprives you of proper nutrition Only in America do people gasp at the idea of deprivation. The overly –indulgent nature of our society is most likely the cause of nutrition deprivation. Eating processed crap will certainly starve my body of much needed nutrients. The claim that doctors make in regard to detox is that it is not healthy to eliminate certain food groups. However, this is only partially true. Detoxing doesn’t always involve cutting carbs, going vegetarian, or giving up sugar. When it does, it serves an important purpose by allowing the body to restore digestive functions and eliminate toxins effectively. Certain detox regimes, such as the Master Cleanse or juicing, do involve eliminating solid foods, gluten, meat, or other things for a period of time. However, giving up steak and potatoes or candy bars for a month is not putting you in danger of nutritional deficiencies. Clinical studies have proven that vegans and vegetarians can acquire the same amount of nutrients and proteins from plant sources as meat-eaters. Additionally, detox programs are short in duration, meaning that you can’t adopt a nutrient deficiency if you decide to juice fast for a week. Granted, it is always wise to speak to a health care practitioner about your needs if you have conditions like diabetes or hypoglycemia, yet most people can safely detox and will not be nutritionally deprived. Another thing to consider about this myth is that giving up certain foods does not mean you are eliminating an entire food group. White bread, for example, can be replaced with sprouted grains, rye, or spelt. Processed sugar can be replaced with natural sugar. The protein in meat can be exchanged for nuts and seeds. Detoxing does not have to be about deprivation and starvation. If you don’t want to drink maple syrup and lemonade for 10 days, there are plenty of foods that you can eat while doing a detox that will keep you nourished and healthy.

The medical community will continue to clamor about detox. One of their biggest claims at the moment is that there is “no data” to scientifically prove that detox is effective. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it might have something to do with the lack of scientific research even conducted on the subject. “No data” simply means that clinical studies have not been performed, evaluated, and infiltrated into the scientific and medical communities. Furthermore, something tells me that they wouldn’t be made public by the very powerhouses that would be threatened by conclusive evidence in support of the health benefits of detox. In any case, the proof is in the pudding. I’ve seen tumors shrink, a diabetic go off his insulin, and many other chronic health issues vanish with detox. As ancient Ayurvedic medicine holds, all disease starts in the GI tract. Where medical doctors and holistic doctors disagree, is how to treat the disease, with the former focusing on controlling symptoms, and the latter investigating and curing the root cause of the disease. Of course it would be difficultto prove that a certain disease went away by cleansing the digestive tract and detoxing. But the process of elimination would suggest that when nothing else works, detox is the culprit of the cure.

What is Food and What it is Not

1. Commercial animals that are used for food are unnatural as in “crossbred, hybrid”. As with commercial produce, their genes are artifically altered by scientists. The “improved” animals that are reproduced from this nonsense are out of balance with Nature. They are continuing to try to improve on the poor pig, as in breeding in flat rumps , giving them level backs, and even toes and such things that will make the animal more “factory ready”.

2. Human genes are being fed to commercial pigs and other animals dead carcasses are being fed to the animals. They are grown in , and fed, poisons and feces just to keep their diseased bodies alive.

Well you might ask, what are they being fed. Okay here goes. Stay with me here:

Animal feed contains DDT, pesticides, hormones, stilbesterol, antibiotics, and tranquilizers.

Cancerous pesticides are fed to animals to keep their manure free of flies.

The diet of commercial chickens include sulfa drugs, hormones, antibiotics, nitrofurans, arsenicals and feces.

Livestock is also fed hugh quanties of often contaminated fish. Yes I said fish-which is not a natural food of cows. And mind you this is what they call “trash fish” that can’t be fixed up to sell to humans. It is fed to factory farm animals solely to enrich the owners of the “factory trawlers” wiping out the fish stocks in our oceans.

The poor pig is routinely fed recycled raw feces-you heard me which is made up of pig/chicken manure waste whcih contains drug residues and high levels of toxic, heavy metals such as arsenic, lead and copper.

In some factories the cattle’s diet may include sawdust laced with ammonia and feathers, shredded newspaper (with toxic ink from print), “plastic hay”, processed sewage, inedible tallow and grease, poultry litter, cement dust, and cardboard scraps, plus insecticides, antibiotics and hormones.

Then to top it off they artificially flavor and scent the concoction to “trick” the animals into eating it. hmmm sound familiar? It should, for essentially this is the delicious and deadly Aerician die-t chemical junk flavored and done up as real food, then deceptively presented to us as good.

Lesson Up People

There is something diabolical going on. The new food thats being created are “Brain Dissolving” in its nature. What is being produced is called “PRION” or to put it in laymens or laywomens terminology it is “Outta Control Protein” which requires the heat of “3500 degrees” to be destroyed. Now I don’t know about your stomach, but whats are regular body tempurature, somewhere around 98.9 degrees F. Hey folks we can’t digest that stuff. Pardon my French but hell, we can barely digest regular flesh.

Okay lets take a look at Fish:

Normally, fish would be the most wholesome animal flesh to consume, but now because of underwater “toxic waste”, eating fish is pretty much just as bad as eating red meat.

The EPA estimates that fish can accumulate up tp 9 million times the level of PCBs in the waters in which they live.

Oh by the way DDT levels in the oceans have damaged a major source of the world’s oxygen supply_ the microscopic Phytoplankton. They also get further contamination from chemicalized ice that they are packed in.

Heres one for ya: Nearly HALF of America’s antibiotics are used on meat animals. In 1991, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta released figures showing that approximately half of the 15 million pounds of antibiotics produced yearly in America, are used on livestock and poultry. Guess what; Antibiotics and Chemicals cannot protect meats. The U.S. Meat Inspection Services recognizes over 42 diseases whcih make flesh eating dangerous and antibiotics USELESS!

The contiuned eating of antibiotics in animal corpes causes human resistance to medicines and immunity to PENICILLIN.

Okay now lets move on to one of my favorites “white sugar”, I’m not even going to capitalize it because some of my family members passes away from diabeties.

You probably already know that white sugar penetrates through the wall of your stomach and small intestines without being digested, giving you a quick high followed by a later crash. When you eat white sugar of sugar-sweetened food, the sugar bypasses digestion and enters your bloodstream within three minutes, yanking up your gloodsugar level. This gives you the perception of having more energy and a felling of well being. This is shortly followed by a crash in bloodsugar levels (due to the release of insulin from the pancreas) and a depression and drop in energy that tends to be corrected with another dose of sugar. This becomes a dangerous habit, subjecting the body to a yoyo of stimulation, depressionm restimulation which results in damge and diseases.

Natural sugars from fruits and vegetables undergo the digestion process and enter the bloodstream gradually without disrupting bloodsugar balance.

Okay getting good to you huh? Alright now for the down and dirty facts!

Sugar is not food. period It provides absolutely no nutrition!

Sugar is added to almost all foods in supermarkets, including common table salt! You can prove this by reading the labels the nextg time you go shopping, keeping in mind that syrup, corn syrup, dextrose, sucrose, maltose, fructose and any other kind of “ose” is sugar.

Sugar is consumed at the rate of nearly 180 lbs. per American each year, according to the USDA. This is almost a half pound per day or the equivalent of eating 8 pounds of sugar cane or sugar beets per day. The average healthy digestive system can only eliminate 2-4 teaspoons of sugar daily. One 12 ounce cola contains 11 teaspoons of sugar.

Sugar causes “cross linking,” making your flesh and skin stiff and leathery. Cross linking is a condition wherein the cellular membranes become so damaged that they become hardened, stiff and stick together, and their protein strands get entangled in each other. When this happens they can no longer perform their normal function. Thus sugar is stiffening human tissues from the inside out speeding up AGING!

Sugar outrightly kills your cells. Sugar addicts often have high uric acid levels in their blood. Uric acid is a braeakdown product of cellular nuclear material. The implication is that sugar is killing human cells…sweetly the next bullet point will explain why. get ready for this…

White Sugar is almost PURE CARBON! The oxidation of white sugar in the body produces Carbonic Acid. Why? Because white sugar is almost pure carbon! Because since it has no nutrients or organic salts, white sugar breaks down cells in order to furnish the blood withe nexxessary alkaline elements to neutralize the carbonic acid formed by the oxidation of the carbon called sugar.

White sugar is loaded with bleached PIG BLOOD and other STUFF. Now this is not me saying this. At one phase of the (beet) sugar “refining” process, “blood albumin from the slaughter house is used” (to flush protein particles out of sugar beets/sugar cane). “also purchased form the slaughter house is bone-black or animal charcoal, which comes from low-grade animals used as a filter to ‘furify’ this mixture called sugar. It is then bleached with a strong bleaching agent referred to as blue water….sixty-five percent of the animals for the markets are swine. Therefore, the slaughter house products being used in processing sugar are derivatives of pork.”

Vegetarian – How To Not Miss That Succulent Pig

Even if your reasons for turning toward a vegetarian lifestyle are moral, ethical or religious, it is common to miss the taste of meat especially when you first start your walk as a vegetarian. The first rule to enforce is not to feel guilty about that. Just loving meat doesn’t make you a bad thing. After all, most of us are raised eating pork, chicken, beef and other meats and if our parents did not have scruples about meat consumption, you have that as part of your upbringing.
The good news is there are lots of substitutes for meat and wonderful recipes you can use so you can eliminate meat from your diet and not feel like you are “going without”. The added benefit is that vegetarian eating is much healthier for your body than a diet where meat is a common ingredient. Meat carries such a higher incidence of calories and fats that are harder for your body to digest and assimilate that you are doing your body a big favor switching to a meatless lifestyle.
One way to still enjoy some of the aspects of meat but eliminate the actual animal part is to go with meat substitutes in traditional meat meals. Many restaurants serve veggie burgers where you get the good taste and familiar meal that we all like about hamburgers but you are still staying totally vegetarian. By shopping at markets and groceries that are supportive of the vegetarian lifestyle, you can often find other traditional meat meals prepared entirely without actual meat to help you get past missing that source of protein.
A staple of vegetarian diet planning is Tofu. Tofu is made from Soya beans so it is totally natural and a good fit to your vegetarian meal planning. But it is full of proteins and it is a very flexible ingredient for vegetarian recipes because it reflects the flavors of other foods and herbs and it works well in dishes that use sauces so it can almost be mistaken for a meat dish.
As you set about building your library of vegetarian recipes that are designed to take meat out of the equation, you will often find Tofu as one of the ingredients. That is because it works so well in lots of different recipes and responds well to grilling, baking or any other preparation method. Just be sure you take the time to dry your Tofu by putting it on a towel and removing the excess moisture before using it.

Women And Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common diseases affecting the muscles, tendons, and joints in women. Many health care professionals still do not recognize the condition as a disorder, most likely, because x-rays, blood tests, and biopsies often show no prevalent evidence to support the patient’s complaints. However, in recent years, the use of thermographs, a device that tests and measures the heat produced by areas of the body, has helped diagnose the condition. Studies indicate that fibromyalgia patients have decreased blood flow and decreased skin temperatures in sites of tenderness. Symptoms include long-term muscle soreness, muscle stiffness, sleeplessness, fatigue, mood changes, anxiety and depression. Often times the condition is worsened by stress and weather changes. Unlike other rheumatic conditions that cause swelling and inflammation of the tissues in the body, fibromyalgia does not cause any type of joint deformity or does not damage any internal organs. Many times, patients that suffer with fibromyalgia have other conditions or disorders that will occur. One of the most common disorders associated with fibromyalgia is TMJ, a disorder associated with the jaw. Many sufferers of fibromyalgia may be diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, as well. Some patients complain of migraine or tension headaches, irritable bowel and bladder syndromes. Some women may develop a loss in memory and concentration. Fibrocystic Breast Disease and Endometriosis is often present in women that have fibromyalgia, although there has been no studies conducted regarding the correlation of the two. Causes of this condition is still unknown, many experts are researching the relationship between menopause and fibromyalgia. Most women are diagnosed with this condition between the ages of 40 to 55 which is when menopause usually occurs, and approximately 85%-90% of all reported Fibromyalgia conditions are women. Hormonal changes, such as the decreased amounts of estrogen in the female body, may contribute to symptoms like anxiety, depression, and sleeplessness in fibromyalgia patients. Research shows, however, that estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy is not that beneficial to fibromyalgia sufferers. There are mild benefits reported when using the estrogen patches rather than the estrogen pills. Some studies indicate that the low thyroid function and decreased levels of thyroid hormones, as well as estrogen and progesterone hormones, may contribute to muscular pain, fatigue, mood changes, and anxiety. At the present time the correlation between menopause and fibromyalgia is uncertain, due to the lack of research on the subject. Fortunately, more tests are being conducted to find out how declining estrogen levels affect the onset of fibromyalgia. On-going research is being conducted that may suggest abnormally low levels of the hormone Cortisol, which is the hormone produced by the adrenal gland may also be a linked cause. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent this disorder or completely cure it, either… Therefore, most treatment’s center on conquering the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. Treatments for women suffering from fibromyalgia vary according to symptoms. In some cases, physical therapy or light exercise may be prescribed. Research has shown that the use of ice immediately following any exercise may decrease muscle and joint pain. The use of tricyclic anti-depressants usually used in treating depression; has also been shown to be an effective medication for treating firbromyalgia. These medications usually relieve depression, anxiety, reduce fatigue, and restores effective sleep patterns. Some physicians may prescribe local injections of analgesics to the sore or stiff areas. The use of pain-relievers and muscle relaxers has both been beneficial in reducing pain symptoms and improving sleep. Often times, doctors will discuss pain and stress management to their patients; which can eliminate some symptoms of the disorder. Diet plays an important role in the prevention of symptoms concerning fibromyalgia. Eating organic foods, such as fruits and vegetables; increasing the intake of low-fat, high fiber foods; those high in Omega-3 Fatty acids, found in fish may benefit sufferers. Some physicians suggest lowering sodium rich foods or eliminating additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG’s) and artificial sweeteners, like Aspartame may relieve many symptoms of fibromyalgia. And recent studies indicate the use of a vegan diet may help alleviate symptoms. Alternative treatments, specifically in the field of homeopathic remedies, suggest taking magnesium, B-12 Vitamins, and Vitamin C. Other non-medical treatments involve massage therapy, heat therapy and cold packs that may temporarily relieve symptoms. The use of Hydrotherapy or water therapy can increase circulation and decrease muscle aches. Currently, there are studies being conducted that may offer more treatments or one specific treatment for helping relieve fibromyalgia symptoms. Women suffering with this disorder may find themselves withdrawing from society due to the pain and anxiety associated with fibromyalgia. Many times, women find themselves unable to work a physical or stressful job. The best advice is to seek treatment and maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes light exercise, good eating habits, and staying active in both, work and life.

How I Lost 31 Pounds and Counting – Part One

Let me preface this article series by saying I am not a dietitian, health care professional, or personal trainer. I am simply a writer and businessman who decided I had to do something about my weight. I was not obese, but certainly was overweight and heading for clogged arteries and probably a heart attack before I hit 50. What follows is what worked for me, and what I honestly believe will work for anyone willing to commit mentally. The key is commitment, and that is the hardest part.
There is no miracle diet, no big secret, and it didn’t cost me a dime. There are no pills, no monthly fees, no fancy diet books, and no gym membership involved. All you need to do is change your thinking, set a goal, make a plan for how you will accomplish that goal, and commit 100 percent.
You must accept that losing weight is not like winning the lottery. You don’t wake up the next day 30 pounds lighter. There is work involved, but not so much it will wear you down. If you treat weight loss like the lottery your chances of success are about the same. Slim to none, and slim just left town.
I am down 31 pounds, and three waist sizes (almost 4) in just over four months. Or, to put it another way I have lost the equivalent of four gallons of milk. Try carrying four gallons of milk around all day. It gets heavy fast. Those four months seemed like a long haul, but looking back it’s quite remarkable that I accomplished, and far exceeded, my original goal. As much as I like to think so, I’m not special. Anyone can do this, even you.
When I was a kid I was a skinny twig. When I was 17-18 years old I would eat two double cheeseburgers, six chicken nuggets, large fries, and a regular Coke for lunch. Every day. I never gained weight.
When I hit 23 years old my metabolism slowed down. I also met the girl of my dreams who is an amazing cook. Fast forward ten years and I had gained 71 pounds! Actually, it only took about four years to put on that 71 pounds. I didn’t do anything about it for another six years.
In February of this year I got that nasty flu that was going around all over the country. I couldn’t shake it, so I went to see a doctor. They weigh you on the way in on an accurate medical scale. I couldn’t believe I weighed 206 pounds. For a man of 5′10″ that’s not bad if you’re solid muscle and play running back for the Cleveland Browns. But, for a guy who is flabby and out of shape that’s overweight.
I realized that the reason I got winded going up the stairs quickly, and the reason for sore knees was not age. It was weight. Something finally clicked in my mind, and I decided right then that I would lose weight. I just didn’t know how.
My wife and I had just booked a trip to Las Vegas for our anniversary in May. My goal was to lose 15 pounds before we left. I had three months to do it. Honestly, I didn’t think I could lose the weight. By the time we left I was down 22 pounds! In the last month since we returned I have dropped another 9 pounds. I had to buy all new pants because I dropped 3 waist sizes.
I have a new goal to take off 10 more to get to 165 pounds. Now that I know how, I’ll meet that goal.
So, the big question is how did I do it, right? Co-workers have asked me if I went on Weight Watchers or Nutri-System. They asked if I was on a low carb diet, a vegan diet, etc. The answer is I simply changed my thinking, and decided to do what it took to lose the weight. I had a goal, and I committed to meeting that goal.
I call it maverick thinking, but it’s not all that radical. Common sense tells you that eating junk is bad, eating foods that are better for you will be, well, better for you. As the saying goes, you are what you eat. I preach maverick thinking in business all the time. Changing the paradigm, etc. It dawned on me that I needed to apply my maverick ideas to my own health.
The first step was to decide on a start date for eating better. You can’t just decide you will eat better without a plan and a solid goal. About a week in advance I decided I would start eating better on February 18th, and I would lose 15 pounds by May 19th. I then wrote the goal down, and marked the calendar. I figured with about 12 weeks if I lost just about a pound or two every week I’d meet my goal. I chose Thursday morning as my weigh-in day each week. My rule was I would only step on the scale on Thursday morning. I would chart my progress weekly, and hopefully stay on track.
During the next week I looked at the plate or wrapper I ate from when I was done eating. The grease left on the plate is really gross. When you really look at it that slime it is pretty nasty. Would you lick that plate? Of course not, it’s disgusting. Then, I considered what I just ate was FULL of that crap. Game over. I couldn’t put that into my body any longer.
From that point on I had embedded in my mind that many of the foods I ate were simply garbage, and the equivalent to eating from a dirty trash can. That’s what it took. I had to change the way I thought about food. It was no longer about how yummy doughnuts are, or how much I liked to taste a greasy cheeseburger. I actually became angry toward those kinds of foods. I began to think how absolutely foolish it is to eat such junk. I didn’t preach to others or say it out loud, but when a co-worker grabbed a doughnut or four at the office I would think to myself, “what a weakling.” That was my motivation to not be tempted to cheat or fall off the wagon. Call it self-righteous if you want, but I’m down 31 pounds, my friend.Whatever it takes.
So, set your goal and motivation. If you want to lose 20 pounds in a week you’re going to be disappointed because it won’t happen. That’s an unrealistic goal. Make it a reasonable time period, even if you think it’s too long. It’s better to shoot for the sky and reach the stars than the other way around. Grab a calendar and write down your goal weight date. Then, chart out how often you’ll weigh in, and set reasonable benchmarks. Keep in mind you will likely lose weight slow at first, then you’ll drop faster, then progress might slow down again before picking up again. Just like your goal, don’t set benchmarks you have no chance of reaching. You’ll only get discouraged, and want to quit. Never quit, never ever quit.
