Ensure Your Baby’s Health With Vitamins

One of the most exciting times in a woman’s life is finding that there will be a new life coming their way in nine months.  Although pregnancy is a wonderful phase, it can also be very tricky to ensure the mother-to-be and baby’s health.  Doctors and nutritionists alike believe that taking vitamins and supplements while pregnant can ensure optimum health for the growing child and mother.

Why take vitamins during pregnancy?

When women find out they are pregnant, it’s very likely that they can be weeks or even months along in gestation.  While the body is preparing for the birth, the nutritional intake of the mother often stays the same.  Therefore, to ensure that the mother and baby’s nutritional needs are met and the baby hits all its developmental key milestones (in relation to growth and formation) during the pregnancy, vitamins are an essential part of the mother’s health regime.

Which vitamins are best to take?

Before conception and in the early stages of pregnancy it is recommended to take 400 micrograms of folate or folic acid.  This supplement is crucial for the baby’s brain and spinal development and is said to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida by up to 70%.

Another important supplement to consider taking while pregnant is iodine.  This essential vitamin helps to develop your baby’s nervous system, plays an important role in regulating your thyroid glands and in producing the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which regulates your metabolism.

As the baby grows into the later months, the blood supply will be increased and therefore anaemia can set in.  To avoid this, organic iron supplements such as iron amino acid chelate can be beneficial, as is calcium, as the baby’s bones are forming and will require the additional nutrients.  If additional supplements are required, look for ones that also contain vitamin C as it aids in absorption.  A non-acidic vitamin C such as calcium ascorbate is more gentle on the stomach.

It can sometimes be difficult to maintain a balanced diet fit for pregnancy due to nutritional choices (being vegetarian or vegan), allergies or just not having the time.  In these cases, a multi-vitamin can lift the mother’s nutritional intake.  However, choosing a pregnancy multi-vitamin as opposed to a regular woman’s multi-vitamin is preferred as they often contain more iron and folate and have lower levels of vitamin A which can be potentially harmful to the unborn child.

Finally, it is important throughout the pregnancy to listen to your doctor and your body.  Not only is your body going through an immense change, but so is the baby.  The nutritional plan that is followed during the pregnancy can often impact the baby, not only whilst in the womb, but for years to come.  Make sure that every effort is taken to adhere to the doctor’s advice and follow a well balanced, healthy diet and vitamin supplement plan.

Eat Your Way to Better Poker II – Remember These Foods to Improve Your Memory

Eat your way to better poker II – Remember these foods to improve your memory“Are you telling me there is something I can eat to improve my memory?” Yes, we are! And we don’t just mean that eating your Auntie’s chicken noodle soup will bring back memories of summer. By eating certain foods regularly, you will improve your brain’s ability to record new memories and to access them quickly, keeping your brain young and ready to learn. How does it work?As the brain ages, it loses the ability to protect itself from daily wear and tear, particularly inflammation (swelling)and oxidation, a process which allows damaging free radicals to attach themselves to cells. In addition to this, brain cells often stop communicating with each other as people age, making it harder for the brain to process thoughts, retain short-term memory and create new cells.“Old neurons are like old married couples — they don’t talk to each other very much anymore. They just sit in the room with the remote and stare at the TV,” says Dr. James Joseph, director of the Neuroscience Lab at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. While research in the field of aging and nutrition is just beginning, scientists have found that diet may help minimize the brain’s sensitivity to oxidation and inflammation, as well as improve brain cells’ ability to communicate with each other. This means that by eating correctly you may keep your brain younger, more nimble, and better able to remember. We will now walk you through several chemicals which have been discovered to improve your memory and general brain condition, not to mention your health and looks!Antioxidants:We have just read that the brain ages because of oxidation and inflammation, which happen because of the brain’s high demands of oxygen for its daily functioning. Now listen to this: if what you want is to minimize inflammation and oxidation, you could do worse than eating lots of antioxidants. These natural chemicals give plants their bright colors, and are especially effective at – you guessed it! – preventing oxidation.A study involving 70 beagles showed that dogs which had been fed an antioxidant-rich diet over several years performed better in old age than their fellows who had eaten a standard diet. These old dogs COULD learn new tricks! Now, we are not calling anyone an “old dog”, but while we all wish we were Annette Obrestad, most of us have already left our teenage years behind and are heading towards Doyle Brunson and Dewey Tomko at this stage. This is why it is so important to get an edge nutrition-wise over all the middle-aged competition out there in the tables, not to mention all those plucky youngsters! So what should you eat to keep your brain as active and healthy as those beagles? As we said earlier, antioxidants give plants their bright colors, so any bright-colored vegetable or fruit is a good bet. Since we really want you to start eating better, we have compiled a list to make your shopping easier. For best results, try to eat at least 5 (but preferably 9) portions of these foods daily. Don’t underestimate the power of vegetables – remember that Daniel Negreanu is a vegetarian, who brings home-cooked vegan packed lunches to big tournaments and has the success rate we all wish we had.The “veg-o-phobes” among you may already be saying “why should I eat all those horrid green things when I can have my cake and take a supplement instead?” We are very sorry, but that just won’t do – most researchers agree that antioxidants present in food are significantly more effective than those from supplements! Think salads are for rabbits? In that case try adding vegetables to your stews, pasta dishes and stir-fries, or blend fruits and yogurt for delicious and nutritious smoothies that will keep you running through those all-night online tourneys!Fruits- Blueberries- Blackberries- Cranberries- Strawberries- Raspberries- Plums- Avocados- Oranges- Red grapes- Cherries- Red applesVegetables- Kale- Spinach- Brussels sprouts- Alfalfa sprouts- Broccoli- Beets- Red bell peppers- Onions- CarrotsStay tuned, because in later articles we will offer you recipes and menus that are bound to make you ace those tables and lick your chops!

Vitamin Supplements To Rejuvenate The Mind Body & Soul

A well-balanced and healthy diet should ideally provide all the essential vitamins and nutrients to an adult. Strictly speaking, vitamin supplements are not really required and even if there is a deficiency it is always recommended that an individual try and restore the balance by altering diet habits rather than relying on supplements. This is because your diet contains a mixture of vitamins and nutrients that are beneficial collectively. It is not the absorption of a single vitamin in high quantity that benefits the body. Supplements cannot offer the same quality of nutrients that food can provide.
However, there are cases when vitamin supplements become a necessity.
It can happen sometimes that an individual requires a higher quantity of certain vitamins or the body is not able to absorb vitamins directly from food. There are also other considerations that make vitamin supplements mandatory.
Pregnant women, for example, are suggested to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid on a daily basis and eat foods rich in vitamins. Folic acid is well known for reducing risk of defects in unborn babies. On the other hand women are advised to restrict vitamin A intake because this too affects the normal growth of a baby.
Children between 6 months and 4 years of age should get rich doses of vitamins A, C, and D in the form of supplements. Vitamin A promotes vision and skin development. Vitamin C is good for bones and body tissue. Vitamin D helps with the growth and strengthening of bones and teeth.
Other groups of individuals may be those whose diet is not providing ample nutrition and they too may require vitamin supplements.
Elder people may find it increasingly difficult to keep up cooking routines they followed in their youth. This is especially true of those folks that stay alone. This can cause a severe drop in the nutritional value of their daily diet and they will typically be recommended a multivitamin as a dietary supplement. People in advanced years may also not be very mobile and consequently spend a lot of time indoors, away from the sun. This can result in vitamin D deficiency and that too needs correction through vitamin supplements.
Vegetarians, and especially absolute vegans, need to take vitamin supplements to include the vitamins and nutrients they are not getting by excluding meat and dairy products. Vitamin supplements become a vital need if these deficiencies are not being countered with high-protein foods like beans and pulses.
Individuals who have a high alcohol intake (not necessarily alcoholics) and those who are chronically ill also have need for vitamin supplements.
It is always better to go for a multivitamin rather than a high concentration of a single vitamin. Whatever multivitamin you choose, just make sure that it has 200 micrograms of folate in it (400 micrograms is recommended for females who are or plan to become pregnant).
Single vitamin supplements should only be taken when prescribed by a doctor or registered dietician. This is because vitamins and minerals need a balanced presence in the body. Like deficiency, too much of one vitamin can also create problems.
Beware of overdosing when taking vitamin supplements.

Avoiding Gastric Bypass Surgery and Still Losing Weight

This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Renegade Roundtable, which can be found at http://www.RenegadeRoundtable.com. In this excerpt, Phillip McClusky shares on being 400 lbs. and what saved him from gastric bypass surgery.
Renegade Water Secrets with Phillip McClusky, who lost 200 lbs. and found health and happiness in a raw food lifestyle. He is the host of www.lovingraw.com.Phillip: Thank you very much Kevin. I appreciate the opportunity to be on the phone with you and for all of your listeners as well. I’m really excited for tonight’s show.Kevin: Awesome. Well, let’s start very simply. Why don’t you just start by talking a little bit about what you went through, in your past, before you started to realize that maybe you needed to change.Phillip: Well, I had been overweight my entire life, so like you had mentioned I grew up being the “cute chubby kid” which everybody liked to pinch my cheeks and such. And then somewhere along elementary school I started to get to be fairly heavy and then junior high school I think it worked into being rather obese. And then high school and after high school I became morbidly obese until finally I reached a point of 400 pounds.
So many people ask me, “How do you get that big?” And the funny thing was is my mom never really had salt or sugar in the house growing up and we didn’t have that much junk food to speak of. But a lot of it tended to be really heavy amounts of food, just large, large portions, eating two and three times the amount that everybody else at the table had, going back for seconds and thirds and just really trying to fill some sort of emotional void that was there instead of dealing with it in other ways. It resulted in emotional eating. So that’s kind of the start of this and really where it brought me up to was an amazing place. It was
very difficult growing up that way.
Many times I didn’t even know there was an option. There were times I just resigned to the fact of thinking that I was never going to be in shape and just actually be happy, and just tried to be happy some how, some way, in shape, form, with being overweight. And I actually tried to do that for a couple of months until I really got to the place where I was like, “That’s just such a terrible attitude. There’s got to be some way…” And I had given up hope. I was researching and just like you mentioned I had tried literally every type of diet known to man. You can mention it and I’ve tried it, I’m sure. Thirty different diets over the course of the time, even some of the other types of things like hypnotism and guided imagery and water fasting and even tried vegetarian and vegan. And for some reason those things just didn’t click in for me, until later on I found raw foods. That discovery really was to be the catalyst to change the rest of my life.Kevin: So you said that you were about to consider, or you maybe even met with the doctor about bypass surgery. Is that correct?Phillip: Yeah, what happened is I didn’t have any…basically after all these different diets I didn’t have any other choice, any other option, I felt, and so I kind of just did what the media was really pushing at the time. And they were really pushing gastric bypass surgery being the only sort of answer for somebody with this type of situation. So literally living and going through all these diets and just feeling hopeless, I thought that that was the only thing for me.
So I went to the hospital and was welcomed in. The surgery was widely accepted and went through literally a month of tests to satisfy my insurance company. Probably eight or nine different tests, sleep apnea, staying in the hospital overnight, heart tests, breathing tests, everything you can think of, to sort of get this approval from my insurance company. And they finally approved it and they said, “Okay, you can have this. We’ll pay for it. You can do it anytime you want.”
I had been going to some of the support groups and had seen people that had already gotten the surgery and found that some people were having complications and there was a chance that people were dying on the table and were dying later on from complications. Even people that were totally healthy, per say, and stuck on the plan very well were still having some complications. And then I had heard about some people who had literally had the surgery and lost 150-200 pounds and then somehow stretched their stomach and gained it all back, which I didn’t even know was possible. Then I actually met a friend’s mother who had lost all the weight, gained it back, somehow convinced another doctor to do the surgery a second time, which I hadn’t even heard of, lost all the weight and gained it back again. So I kind of felt like this wasn’t the answer, but it was the only thing.
As I was about to actually have it done at the very last moment just a still voice inside me said, “Don’t do it.” And I knew at that moment that there had to be some other option. So that’s when I really decided to bypass gastric bypass surgery.Kevin: Wow. So take me through the thought process here. You tried all these other things, literally a Rolodex of different things that you’ve done. They haven’t worked. So you’re faced with bypass surgery, not bypass surgery, oh my gosh…You’re faced with this surgery. How did you make a decision to do what you did? And did you know it was going to work?Phillip: You know, I didn’t know raw was going to work per say, but I had to try something. The last thing I was doing was reading some books about water fasting and somebody in the book had mentioned raw foods. I did a seven-day water fast. It was a very nice experience. It was quite successful. But I heard this word “raw food” and I didn’t know what that meant. So I googled it online and just did a little bit of research and ran across this book called “Raw Family” by the Boutenkos. Each one of the four people in the family had a different disease and they all overcame them with raw food. For some reason when I read this, I mean I literally read the book in an hour, and something just resonated in me. I just felt that somehow, some way, this was the ticket for me. This was what was really going to work this time.
I had no reservations. I literally switched overnight from eating heavy amounts of fast food, basically fast food almost every meal, probably anywhere from two to three times the amount of food the average person eats, switched overnight to 100 percent raw foods. I kind of just knew that it would work and I just made the switch, made a commitment. But more than anything I really made a switch in my mindset, I think, which was the thing that really helped me to make this switch. Because it really wasn’t so much of a struggle this time around, as so many of the other diets were, it was literally like my mind was like, “Okay, you don’t eat this type of food anymore, now you eat this.” And so the process and making the choice was quite simple and I really felt deep down inside that this was going to be the answer for me. Basically I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and I had reached my low.
So many people don’t make change in their life until they’re actually standing in front of their doctor and their doctor says, “Okay, you’re dying. You have a year to live. You have to make a choice about your health.” Then all of a sudden everybody gets excited and wants to make a change in their life. But for me the day that I stepped on the scale and the needle went to 400, that was kind of like my death sentence. So I knew I had to find something and nothing really felt right, it was just what I was doing with the time.
But when I found out and heard and started reading about this raw food thing it just made sense. There was nobody out to make money off of it. There wasn’t any packaged foods I had to make or any cards that I had to move from slot to slot, or any programs or any monthly fees that I had to pay. There was not big mastermind behind this. It was just fruits and vegetables. You could even grow it in your backyard. It seemed simple and it just felt right. And that’s when I went for it Kevin.

Supplements for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a very serious disease of your bones that can lead to breakdown of the bone density, causing it to be weak enough that it is susceptible to breakage.  People sometimes do not believe osteoporosis to be serious, since it is a gradual disease with a gradual onset of symptoms. In other words, nobody that gets osteoporosis is metaphorically hit over the head with a crux of issues all at once.  Unlike cancer or another serious illness, there is no immediate life-threatening problem when one develops osteoporosis.  However, being diagnosed with osteoporosis can truly remove the quality of a person’s life. Luckily, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent the development of this disease which generally affects the elderly. It is very important to take measures early in life so as to avoid this progressive disease later on.

Exercise is a great way to fight osteoporosis early in life.  Believe it or not, exercise is critical for the prevention of weak bones and, besides its other positives, this is just another reason why exercise should be a daily part of your routine.  Any weight-bearing exercise is particularly good for osteoporosis, such as weight training, running, or other high-impact sports and activities.  While you have probably heard that running is hard on the knees or hips, in reality your bones are getting stronger the longer one continues this type of activity.  The striking and impact of your foot on the pavement or hard ground actually works to harden the bones to breakage over time.

Weight training is another very popular exercise that is good in preventing osteoporosis.  Weight training has become increasingly more popular over the years, and gym memberships have risen drastically as men, women and children alike can now be found lifting weights for good health.  Weight training also helps to increase bone density, as well as improve your posture, improve your mood, and many report an improvement in self-confidence.

Other than exercise, you can help prevent osteoporosis with certain supplements.  Some of the most common supplements for the prevention of osteoporosis are calcium and vitamin D.  Most people are aware that calcium is important for strong bones and teeth.  They hear it on commercials and their parents tell them from the time they are little to drink their milk. However, most people probably do not take it as seriously as they should.  It really is a good idea to supplement with calcium every day to help prevent osteoporosis down the road.  Calcium supports bone density and bone healing.

While it is true that milk and other dairy products are a good source of calcium, you may not be getting all the calcium you need from these sources.  If you are a vegetarian or vegan especially, who does not consume any dairy products, it is especially important for you to take a calcium supplement.  Broccoli and fortified orange juice contain good amounts of calcium, but you probably cannot stomach enough broccoli to make it worthwhile.

Vitamin D occurs naturally with sunshine, so getting your exercise outdoors can help provide you with the vitamin D you need.  Remember to wear your sunscreen, of course. While outside activity in the sun can be a wonderful and fun source of Vitamin D, you will likely not get enough of it without supplementation.  Some areas of the country are sunnier than others, and then there are the winter months to consider when people tend to stay indoors more often.  With the amount of Vitamin D supplements available, it can easily be incorporated into your daily routine.

In keeping up with your protein consumption, and also increasing your Vitamin C and Vitamin K intake, you can also help keep your bones stronger and prevent osteoporosis.  Again, you can do this by supplementing if you are uncertain as to whether your diet provides sufficient amounts of these important vitamins.

A supplement called glucosamine chondroitin, which is actually two supplements generally sold in a compound as one, is very helpful with joint pain associated with age and increased activity level.  While not directly helpful for the prevention of osteoporosis, it is used to treat osteoarthritis.  You may want to consider adding this supplement to help prevent the aches and pains that sometimes occur in your bones as you age and try to maintain the same level of activity and fitness.

Supplementing with these vitamins, minerals, and aminos can be very beneficial when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and diet.  Make sure to keep your alcohol consumption in moderation for healthy bones as well as cut out any smoking habit you may have, since smoking and heavy drinking both increase the risk of osteoporosis.  Follow these simple rules and you will increase your chances of having strong, healthy bones for life.

The Three Most Common Mistake With Skincare

Our skin is our largest organ.  It’s living and breathing and it protects your internal organs from the invasive and dangerous elements of life: viruses, bacteria, pollutants, and harsh weather, including the sun. Many people don’t understand or fully appreciate the role that our skin plays on our overall health and well being.  Most of us focus on the end result, which is how our skin looks, rather than the process of reaching and maintaining that appearance through healthy choices.  This results in the most commonly made mistakes with skin care:Not realizing that what you put into your body shows on the outside.By not maintaining a well-balanced diet of foods and liquids rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and by poisoning your system with too many harmful substances such as an overabundance of alcohol or cigarettes, you harm your skin. Too much alcohol can dehydrate your skin and cigarettes deprive it of the oxygen it requires.  Supplement your diet with Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) like cod-liver oil or borage, flax & coconut if you’re vegan.  And PLEASE drink plenty of water!  Add a slice of orange or sprig of mint to spruce up your water drinking experience.Neglecting your skin when it’s young. The sun and the wind can damage your skin. This damage might not show when you’re young, but just like your favorite leather coat, the wrinkles and cracking will show with age. If you treat your leather coat with moisturizers when it’s new and continue treating it throughout the years, you can wear that jacket for a very long time without it showing its age. The same goes for your skin. Moisturize it before it shows signs of needing the moisture and it will stay healthier as it ages.  Use a heavier crème at night to re-hydrate your skin & assist with repairing cellular degeneration.Using skin care products that promise instant results. Most skin products that are manufactured and full of ‘instant improvement’ guarantees are just full of chemicals and broken promises. And, if you listen carefully most of their marketing campaigns state that they will give you healthy-looking skin, which is a far cry from having skin that’s healthy. Use all-natural creams and cleansers when taking care of your skin. Avoid ingredients like mineral oil, alcohol, lanolin & parabens (preservatives).

A cheeseburger with bacon and fries can deliver a whopping 84g of total fat and 37%of saturated fat in the worst case, a new study by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has found.

In particular, they should avoid too much saturated fats which can send cholesterol levels soaring and put you at risk of a heart attack, while too much fat of any type in your diet can make you obese and unhealthy. The FSAI’s chief specialist in food science, Dr Wayne Anderson, called on fast food outlets to provide healthier meals for customers.

People should eat no more than 20g of saturated fat in a day — anything more than 10g in a single meal is considered a high level. The daily threshold for total fat is 70g, and foods containing more than 35g are considered high fat.

Popular Manufacturing Trends in Todays Global Economy

Economic downturn of 2008 notwithstanding, the U.S. market for nutritional supplements is poised for healthy growth, with sales forecast to climb 39% from 2007 to 2012.Packaged FoodsApparently, all is well with the nutraceutical industry and it knows very little about recession. While many other industries are experiencing all time lows in profitability margins, some nutraceutical products are actually gaining wider popularity. It seems the recession is teaching Americans the value of low-cost, preventive healthcare. More people are lining up for vitamin supplements and various other health supplements to meet their health needs as an alternative to expensive conventional medicine. All said and done, in spite of the global financial crisis and its effects on our economies, the bottom line is that people still need to eat and keep healthy. So the nutraceutical industry manages to keep afloat in spite of all odds.Global is the word for nutraceuticals. With many ingredients being imported from all parts of the world, contract manufacturers face a tough challenge keeping track of new research on herbs, nutrients, botanicals and formulating innovative products through in-house research in order to produce a superior, quality product that not only conforms to the newly installed FDA GMPs, but also meets rising demands of today’s consumer.Upward TrendJust how well is nutraceutical manufacturing thriving? Information Resources, a Chicago-based market research agency, reported an 8 percent growth in the sale of vitamins for the last quarter of 2008 as compared to the same period in 2007. During October 2008 to March 2009, Vitamin Shoppe noted that 20 percent of their customers were first time buyers of supplements like probiotics, glucosamine/chondroitin, probiotics, multi-vitamins, omega 3s, and herbal extracts. Why are profits soaring upwards for health supplement companies when the economy continues its spiraling trend downwards? A story reported in the April 4, 2009 edition of New York Times may help us to understand why. It expresses the sentiments of most Americans today. Here is what 40-year old Jacqueline Kreiss, a presently unemployed hairdresser and make-up artist, said when asked why she was buying vitamin supplements:“I don’t have health insurance, so I can’t go and see a doctor because it’s very expensive. The economy just really put me backward, so I started relying on the vitamins.” When asked whether the vitamins worked for her, she said she felt very energetic and strong. In her words, “I feel I’m in full form to go out there and get a job.”A 42-year-old working in the financial sector of Los Angeles reports that she takes a combination of herbal ingredients to support “calmness”. And the list goes on. There is definitely a growing interest in herbs and nutritional supplements as seen in the rising sales of nutraceutical products against a backdrop of economic uncertainty.According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, personal care products registered a 5.65 percent rise in sales in December 2008, when compared to the previous year. Consumer preference was towards natural personal care products.Global sales of nutraceutical drinks have risen by 9 percent according to Zenith International’s 2009 Global Nutraceutical Drinks Report with North America having the largest share, 47 percent in volume, followed by Japan.Another sector that has seen upward growth is sports nutrition, with energy drinks and high-protein formulas being the most popular along with proteolytic enzyme formulas. More people are seriously turning to preventive health measures such as diet, exercise and health supplements in an effort to avoid conventional medical treatments with its skyrocketing costs. Not all sectors have experienced such jubilant growth, however. Organic foods and functional foods that are higher priced have seen a slump. Trends show that consumers would rather pay for natural/herbal supplements which target their specific health needs, rather than pay extra for organic or functional foods. The general perception is that health supplements provide more health value than organic or functional foods. It’s a matter of taking health into your own hands and being penny wise rather than pound foolish in these difficult times. Health supplements are seen as being penny wise against a doctor’s visitation which could prove to be pound foolish in hindsight.Private Label Contract Manufacturing Stays on TopWe see more sales in private label manufacturing especially as the public continues to perceive private label brands as equal in quality to major selling brands which are often more expensive. Many chain stores have introduced innovative products that help people bite the economic crunch and stay on top of health issues. It is interesting to note that private label’s unit market shares rose 1.8 percent in the recession of 2001-2003, according to the Private Label Manufacturers Association. Current statistics are likely to show even more favorable results for private label manufacturing.Popular private label supplements include multi-vitamins particularly Vitamins C, D, E and K, probiotics, fish oil, anti-aging agents, green tea, diet and weight management products, anti-stress, sleep aid products, eye-health products, personal care products, fiber-based products, bone health products, sugar-control products, glucosamine/chondroitin and coenzyme Q10. “Free from” products are also being received well by consumers. For instance, gluten-free, or “free from bovine sources” are in popular demand, as are kosher and vegan products. More TrendsTrends are moving towards products that are more convenient to use and eco-friendly. Individual sachet packaging, or easy-to-swallow gel capsules instead of tablets. Over-packaging of products can be seen as being wasteful in an economy that is sensitive to good stewardship of our earthly resources.Global competition is a key concern. With countries like China and India aligning themselves to cGMPs and selling quality products at a fraction of the price, small and large key players in the nutraceutical industry may be forced to move their operating plants to third world countries in order to stay competitive. What’s Cooking in the Nutraceutical World?Hemp-derived supplements are creating a buzz. Hemp oil is believed to be a good source of omega 3 and omega 6, amino acids and antioxidants. Use of hemp supplements may benefit diabetics, those with respiratory illnesses, or suffering from arthritis. They are also believed to provide a sense of mental wellness.According to the April 2009 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, research shows a combination of fish oil and walnut can help to reduce the risk of heart disease. In December 2008, Rebaudioside A (reb A), a natural sweetner made from stevia plants, received a status of generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA. Reb A has very little calories and is ten times sweeter than normal sugar, and now can be used as a general purpose sweetener at 95% purity or above. This is great news for nutraceutical companies who can now formulate sweeter products with very little calories. The recession has brought in a sense of global competitiveness. Start-up companies have bore the worse brunt. Albeit, many companies have cut down on controllable costs and lowered their prices to benefit the public, but at the end of the quarter, there is still a silver lining surrounding a dark cloud for the nutraceutical industry. Backed by scientific research, both the medical profession and consumers are now finding nutritional supplements are a better option for health. Unhealthy lifestyles and an aging population all contribute to the global growth of this industry. A new ray for an even better future awaits nutraceutical manufacturing as new healthcare reforms from the Obama administration, seek to encourage the use of complementary and alternative medicines.
